Summary:Manuscript letter apart from some routine family news, Walter Sampson indicates the effect the Great War was having on his finances. In apologising for not sending his usual Christmas "box of fruit" to his brother's children, he explains his situation. "I can hardly afford any presents of any kind this year, what with war taxes and contributions to very necessary patriotic and relief funds together with a very much reduced income we find it necessary to cut out all luxuries and expenses that can be avoided." Walters support for the war effort was unquestionable and he insists that Sampson keep him informed of "Michael's [John Sampson's eldest son] military movements as I am most keenly interested."
