| Biographical/Administrative Information: | Jesse Alfred Twemlow was born in Liverpool on the 8th August 1867. He was educated at the Liverpool Institute, University College Liverpool (now part of the University of Liverpool). He appears to have studied at Liverpool through the Christopher Bushell scholarship, although he graduated at London. During his time at Liverpool he was involved in the production of the university publication "The Sphinx". He then appears to have spent approximately a year in the home civil service before being awarded a scholarship (Dixon Research) at Christ Church College, Oxford in 1892. He graduated here with second class honours in history. Twemlow next studied at the Ecole des Chartres in Paris. (this institution undertook to train staff to run archives and libraries) Here he developed further his skills in palaeography, diplomatics and bibliography which were so important to his career. Twemlow won both the Lothian and Stanhope essay prizes during his time as a student. After completing his studies he was appointed to work for the Public Record Office and was sent to Rome for part of every year to work in the Vatican archives editing The Calendar of entries in the Papal Registers relating to Great Britain and Ireland. Papal Letters and was involved in editorial work on volumes 4-16. (DA25.C931). He took up the post of Lecturer in Palaeography and Diplomatics at the School of Local History and Records (originally entitled The School of Local History and Palaeography) at the University of Liverpool in 1908. He also became the honorary secretary and general editor for the school. The main aim of the school was to further local study and research. His own particular work for the school involved the editing of two volumes of the Liverpool Town Books 1550-1603 LUP.918.LIV volumes 1 and 2. Twemlow became an Associate Professor of the university in 1921 and kept this title until his retirement in 1934. During this time he was chosen to represent the University at the celebrations of the L'ecole des Chartres in 1921 and the University of Naples in 1924. Twemlow was also involved in several local societies including the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, the Liverpool and District Regional Survey Association, the Italian Literary Society and the Liverpool History Teachers Association. There are also a few letters relating to the Gypsy Lore Society within the archive. I have included below a list of publications produced by Twemlow.
