Separated Material:Mr Ashley acquired a collection of Mr Bradshaw's drawings during the clearing of a house in London early in 1987.
Biographical/Administrative Information:H Chalton Bradshaw, student in the School of Architecture 1912-1915, Certificate of Architecture 1913, winner of the first British Prix de Rome for Architecture 1915.Some of the drawings, of which there are some photographs in this gift, relate to Mr Bradshaw's studies as a Rome Scholar, in particular to the restoration of the Villa di Papa Giulio (in conjunction with Mr de Soissons) and the restoration of an Etruscan temple, Civita Castellana (evidently published in Vol. 8 of the Papers of the British School in Rome).In 1923 Mr Bradshaw became first Secretary of the Fine Art Commission. He became FRIBA in 1929 and CBE in 1935. An honorary MArch degree was conferred upon him by the University of Liverpool in 1930.His work includes the Foot Guards' Memorial, London (1924;see D435 /12), the Cambrai and Lille War Memorials (1924), and an extension (1923) and a new East wing (1937) for the British School in Rome.For further details see University Archives correspondence file A4/1(1324).
