Summary:Some of the Inorganic Chemistry Lectures were given by Professor E.C.C. Baly, but Mr. Burnett believes that the others were given by Mr. D.M. Edwards, Demonstrator and Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry.Mr. Burnett notes the historical interest of Professor Baly's lectures. At the time, he was working on "Baly's Formaldehyde Hypothesis" (since discredited) that the first step in the photosynthesis of carbohydrates (in plants) was the reaction of carbon dioxide and water to give formaldehyde and oxygen: this was supposed to take place by the action of light in the presence of a coloured catalyst.
