Biographical/Administrative Information: | William Rathbone IV was the son of William Rathbone III and Rachel, née Rutter. Liverpool ship-owner and merchant involved in organising American trade with Liverpool. Founder member of Liverpool Committee for the Abolition of the slave trade. Broke with Quakers after writing the Narrative of Events in Ireland among the Quakers in protest at religious intolerance in the Society of Friends. Married in 1786 Hannah Mary Reynolds (1761-1839), daughter of Richard Reynolds of Bristol and Hannah (née Darby), and had eight children, of whom five lived to adulthood: William Rathbone V (1787-1868), Richard (1788-1860), Hannah Mary (1791-1831), Benson (1800-1834) and Theodore William (1798-1863). |
