Her great great grandfather had married a Gypsy Boswell named Dorelia and Dorothy was proud of her Gypsy heritage, pursuing her Gypsy studies throughout her life. In 1950 she presented her extensive collection of Romany literature and materials to the University of Leeds Library Brotherton Collection, of which she was already Patron and Honourary Consultant and was appointed its Honorary Curator. She was the author of a play Gypsy Dorelia (1931), along with other stories and plays, and of many articles in the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society.
