Date:1881-1964
Reference Number:D42/AC14
Arrangement:

These files from the Chief Accountant's filing system appear to have been transferred into transfer cases between 1941 and 1964. The original file number often remains on the file cover and the files have been ordered here (1998) according to that number which appears to have been more or less a subject arrangement.

The three figure references (e.g. 510, 522, 837) appear to have been Cunard company references, and in a few cases, these have been superseded by new references, possibly when files were transferred to Cunard White Star use. This is however rare, and in this listing, the earlier reference of two is preferred.

N.B. In the list of Cunard archives prepared in the 1970s, these files were listed in the order they were found in the transfer boxes: this was meaningless in terms of the functions of the Chief Accountant's office, and a decision was taken in 1998 to give a more meaningful order to the files. Although this may cause confusion to the (very few) searchers who have previously used this section the current arrangement makes files far easier to identify.
