Biographical/Administrative Information:The Department of Tropical Hygiene was first described as such in 1929 and initially consisted of only a temporary external lecturer, the first Professor in Tropical Hygiene, Professor Blacklock, having been appointed in 1934. The Department continued to exist on a small scale until 1971 when the it was restructured and renamed the Department of Tropical Community Health with its emphasis on promoting community development in the Third World through research and teaching. In 1978 the name of the department changed once again to the Department of International Community Health, reflecting the continuing evolution in its concern for health in relation to geographical location to its concern for health in relation to socio-economic status and areas of study such as population dynamics, family planning and environmental health.
