Biographical/Administrative Information:Professor Edgar Stones (1922-2005) was born at Brampton, Yorkshire and initially educated at Wath-upon-Dearne Grammar School, 1933-38. Parental circumstances dictated that he was unable to continue his education and he joined the RAF as an engineering apprentice in 1938. He purchased his discharge from the RAF in 1948 and with the support of the Ministry of Education he studied English and Psychology at Sheffield University, graduating BA Honours in 1951. Following teaching in schools and a college of further education, he joined the staff of the University of Birmingham in 1971 as a Lecturer in Educational Psychology. In 1972 Dr. Stones was appointed to the William Roscoe Chair of Education and Director of the Institute of Education, retiring in 1982. He then became Director of the Institute for Advanced Research in the Arts and Social Sciences at Birmingham University where he was latterly Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Psychology.
