Summary:

The album takes the form of cards, each with a signature, stuck onto the pages which had small seaweeds pressed on to them by Dr. Joanna Jones (who was responsible for putting the album together).

Dr. Jones provided further information about some of those distinguished fellow algologists/phycologists whose signatures are included, in the following order:

  • Lily Newton was Professor of Botany at Aberystwyth (and Deputy Principal of Aberystwyth University College for a time) and wrote the standard text on British seaweeds.
  • Mary Pocock, an eminent algologist/phycologist, spent most of her life in South Africa.
  • E.M. (Marion) Delf Smith was an algologist/phycologist at Westfield College, University of London, as head of the Botany Department until she retired.
  • J. R. Bruce was Deputy Director, Marine Biological Station, Port Erin.
  • Mrs. Elsie Conway was on the staff of the Botany Department, University of Glasgow.
  • Helen Blackwell was at St.Andrews University.
  • Mrs Hannah Downes was Dr. Mary Parke's sister
  • F.S. Russell was Director of the Marine Biological Station, Plymouth.
  • Douglas Wilson was at the Marine Biological Station, Plymouth.
  • Alison Wilson was the wife of Douglas Wilson.
  • W. Crewe later joined the staff of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
  • Eve Southward and Alan Southward were PhD students at the Marine Biological Station, Port Erin, who later joined the staff of the Marine Biological Station, Plymouth.
  • I[rene] Manton was a Professor at the University of Leeds.
  • Peter Dixon was on the staff of the Botany Department, University of Liverpool, until the 1960s, when he moved to the USA.
  • Margaret Martin was on the staff of Bangor University College.
  • Harry Powell was at the Marine Biological Station at Millport, Scotland then at Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory, near Oban.
  • David Irvine was on the staff of the Polytechnic of North London.
  • John Colman was Director of the Marine Biological Station, Port Erin.
  • Munro Dodd, a Zoologist, was later Director of the Marine Biological Station, St.Andrews.
  • George Russell was on the staff of the Botany Department, University of Liverpool.
  • Mavis and Alan [Bowers]: Alan Bowers was on the staff of the Marine Biological Station, Port Erin.
  • John Lund, a freshwater algologist/phycologist, spent most of his professional working life at the Freshwater Biological Association, Ferry House, Ambleside.
  • G.E. ('Teddy') Fogg was a Professor at Westfield College, University of London, and later Director of the Menai Bridge Marine Laboratories.
  • Alan Burges was Professor of Botany, University of Liverpool, 1952-66.
  • R.A. Morton was Professor of Biochemistry, University of Liverpool, 1944-66.
  • J.F. Mountford (Sir James Mountford) was Vice-Chancellor, University of Liverpool, 1945-63.
  • Doris M. Mountford (Lady Mountford) was wife of Sir James Mountford
  • Bunny was Dr. Elsie Burrows, Senior Lecturer in Botany, University of Liverpool.
  • Winifred E. Frost was on the staff of the Freshwater Fisheries Laboratory, Ambleside.
  • Edna M. Lind was on the staff of the Freshwater Biological Association, Ambleside
  • Gill was Bunny (Elsie) Burrows' adopted daughter.

Biographical/Administrative Information:This album was put together by Dr. Joanna Jones (then a Lecturer in the Department of Marine Biology) for the 80th birthday of Dr. Margery Knight. Dr. Knight (1889-1973) was Lecturer in Botany, 1912-54, and Warden of University Hall, 1943-54; an obituary of her, written by Professor N.A. Burges, was published in The University of Liverpool Recorder, No.63, October 1973, pp.25-27.
