Biographical/Administrative Information:The Centenary Celebrations Committee was established as a joint committee of the Council and the Senate in May 1975. At its meeting in August 1975 the Committee recommended that Emeritus Professor Thomas Kelly be invited to undertake the writing of the history of University College, Liverpool and the University of Liverpool for completion by 1980. Professor Kelly accepted the invitation and to assist him a Research Assistant, Mrs Helen F Davies was appointed, taking up her appointment on 1 Dec 1976. The manuscript of the History For Advancement of learning: the University of Liverpool 1881-1981 (including a postscript by the Vice-Chancellor Em Professor R F Whelan) was delivered to Liverpool University Press at the end of January 1980 and published in May 1981, during the Centenary Celebrations.
