Summary: | The Next Step (editorial) This issue went to press a few hours after Sir Keith Joseph's announcement that he was setting up an independent inquiry into the GMC; the BMA must be aware of the need for professional independence and must stress that need; over 5,000 doctors had been prepared to hazard their livelihoods on a point of principle; the GMC's president Lord Cohen of Birkenhead, has in their view, suffered more than his fair share of personal attacks; speakers in BMA debates have suggested - and a BMJ editorial has hinted - that the main obstruction to settlement was his personality; but he was determined to protect the statutory position of the GMC as created by Act of Parliament; ends on encomium of Lord Cohen. |
