Biographical/Administrative Information: | Clarke's interest in butterflies dated from his childhood in Leicestershire. It was reawakened during his time in Australia at the end of the Second World War and he continued to pursue it back in England. In the late 1940s he developed a 'hand-pairing' technique of mating Papilio butterflies that made it possible to begin a range of genetic investigations of butterflies. |
