Biographical/Administrative Information:

Elsie Ellen Booth was born in Wealdstone (Harrow), the elder daughter of Augustus Clinton Booth, a telegraphs engineer.  She was descended on her mother’s side from Thomas Malby, an eminent cartographic lithographer and globe maker.

Elsie was educated at North London Collegiate School. In 1922 she enrolled for a BA Honours in Geography at the University of Liverpool. She studied under the eminent Professor Percy M Roxby, whose teaching had a life-long influence on her.

After her undergraduate degree she took a one year course leading to the Diploma in Education and had a brief career as a teacher before her marriage to George Hugh Turner in 1930.

Elsie maintained strong links with the University of Liverpool.  She and her husband were both active in the University of Liverpool Society (ULIS), in Convocation (including the Standing Committee) as well as the Court. They were also active members of the East and West Friendship Society, a group dedicated to maintaining a welcoming environment for overseas students.
