Biographical/Administrative Information:Francis Xavier Velarde was born in Liverpool on 14 October 1897. He attended the Liverpool School of Art, then tranferred to the University of Liverpool in 1920, receiving a Diploma in Architecture in 1924 and a Bachelor of Architecture in July 1932. He was a lecturer in the School of Architecture at the University of Liverpool from 1928 until 1954. Most of Velarde's churches are in Merseyside and North West England, and the vast majority are Catholic churches. He also designed some Catholic schools. He was awarded an OBE in 1957, and died on 28 December 1960.
