Biographical/Administrative Information:Thomas Roby, Director of John Roby Ltd., based in Rainhill, near Liverpool, was a firm of brass founders who made brass fittings for ship builders. The company had close connections with Thomas Utley & Co., Ltd. Liverpool, with Thomas Roby being elected to their Board in 1928. In 1930 Thomas Utley & Co. successfully tendered for the manufacture and supply of windows and sidelights for Hull No. 534 (RMS Queen Mary). However, the suspension of work on the vessel had a negative impact on the company which suffered a loss of income. As a result John Roby Ltd. purchased the name Thomas Utley in 1932, forming a new company entitled Thomas Utley (Rainhill) Limited which continued to manufacture Thomas Utley products.
