Geoffrey Hughes was the youngest son of John William and Elizabeth Hughes, he worked for his father's firm T. & J. Harrison, Shipwoners, Liverpool but joined the 6th Battalion The King's Liverpool Regiment at the outbreak of the War. He was killed by shell fire whilst serving with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards on August 5th 1918.The Athletic grounds were more commonly known as 'Wyncote'. In 1929 additional land was acquired to expand these facilities and in 1962 a new pavilion was erected, designed by Gerald Beech of the Architecture Department.
