Biographical/Administrative Information:The establishment of a Veterinary Field Station on the Wirral was strongly recommended in the Loveday Report on Veterinary Education (1938) and the Government was recommended to make a grant for this. This grant was delayed by the start of the second world war but in 1941-1943, with assistance from J Bibby and Sons and some increase in annual grant from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the University was able to establish a Field Station and a small student hostel in at Leahurst, near Neston. Two of Bibby's experimental farms were made available for student training and farm buildings were converted to an animal hospital and animal husbandry unit. In 1969 a major extension was completed at Leahurst.
