At its meeting on 1 March 1938 the Council appointed its representatives on the Joint Committee to supervise and co-ordinate the system of Physical Training and Medical Examination of Students. This decision was taken in the light of the Report of the Senate on the Physical Training of Students (Report Book Vol. 19 p. 36) which, inter alia, recommended the establishment of a Joint Committee of the Council and the Senate on Health Services; the Council approved, with amendments, this Report at its meeting on 10 May 1937. It would appear that this Committee ceased to meet after its meeting on 8 March 1940, although the Council did not decide to dissolve it until 18 December 1945 when it requested the Senate to consider the appointment of a Standing Committee on Health Services. The Senate at its meeting on 30 Jan. 1946 appointed the members of the Standing Committee on Health Services.

The Senate at its meeting on 31 Oct. 1962 decided to set up two new Committees to replace the Health Services Committee: the Recreation and Welfare Committee (later Student Welfare and Accommodation Committee) and the Health Services Committee. At its meeting on 15 May 1964 the Recreation and Welfare Committee was informed that as from 1 Oct. 1964 those aspects of its work concerned with recreational activities would become the concern of the Joint Physical Recreation Committee, and the Committee was re christened the Student Welfare and Accommodation Committee with a constitution and terms of reference approved by Senate at its meeting on 7 July 1964 (Minute 12).

Senate at its meeting on 9 July 1968 (Minute ) decided that a single Committee - the Student Health and Welfare Committee - should be constituted to assume responsibility for student health and welfare.
