Biographical/Administrative Information:

Up until 1985 Earth & Ocean Sciences studies were carried out in three separate centres within the University - in the Departments of Geology, Geophysics and Oceanography.

The Department of Geology was established in 1917, largely due to the interest and generosity of Professor William Herdman, Professor of Natural History in the University from 1881 to 1919 and Professor of Oceanography from 1919 to 1920. In 1928 the Department moved to its present building, the purpose-built Jane Herdman Laboratories of Geology - a memorial to the late Lady Herdman; wife of Sir William Herdman.

Geophysics was a sub-department of both Physics and Geology, having been set up in 1963 by Professors Cassles, Shackleton and Pitcher. It provided the first U.K. B.Sc. degree course in Geophysics in 1967.

The Oceanography Department owed its origins to the Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries established by Sir William and Lady Herdman in 1919. It enjoyed strong links with the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory at Bidston, Wirral which from its inception until 1st April 1969 was an institute of the University of Liverpool. Work is nearly completed on a major programme to relocate the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory from its present site at Bidston, Wirral, to the University precinct. The Laboratory will occupy a new £4.5 million building on the site of the University's Thornley Building, with a link to the Herdman Building, and easy access to the Nicholson Building, which now house the Department's oceanographic laboratories.

In 1985, the departments of Geology and Geophysics merged to form the Department of Geological Sciences located in the newly extended Herdman Laboratories. However, the special equipment provided for Geomagnetism in the Oliver Lodge Laboratory next to the Physics Department has meant the staff in the Geomagnetism Laboratories have remained on the other side of the campus. In 1987, the two departments of Oceanography and Geological Sciences merged to become the Department of Earth Sciences. In 2003 the Department was renamed "Earth & Ocean Sciences" to more accurately reflect the teaching and research
