Biographical/Administrative Information:

The teaching of Public Health began in 1885 and the first meeting of the Sanitary Science Instruction Committee was held in University College, Liverpool in 1887. The Local Government Act of 1888 made the possession of a Diploma in Public Health essential for appointment as a Medical Officer of Health and thus the teaching of Public Health became more important. The first School of Hygiene and Museum was opened in Ashton Street in July 1898. Purpose built accommodation at the corner of Oxford Street and at 126 Mount Pleasant was opened in 1914 and the School relocated there in 1919. 1947 saw the name change to the Department of Public Health and in 1973 it became the Department of Community and Environmental Health.
