Biographical/Administrative Information:Liverpool's first Infirmary was built in 1748 on Shaw's Brow, close to what is now St George's Hall. In 1824 this was replaced by a second Infirmary located at the top of Brownlow Hill, renamed the Liverpool Royal Infirmary in 1851. In 1885 the architect Alfred Waterhouse was commissioned to submit plans for the new Liverpool Royal Infirmary to be situated on a block of ground adjacent to the present hospital. This hospital opened in 1889 and remained in use until 1978 when the new Royal University Hospital was built.
