Biographical/Administrative Information:The development of Metallurgy as a separate department was primarily due to the efforts of Dr T L Bailey, Departmental Lecturer in Metallurgy (within the Chemistry Department) from 1895. Funds were made available for a metallurgy laboratory in 1896, and considerable progress was made under Charles Olden Bannister, Chair between 1920-1941. In 1921, the department moved to 42 Bedford Street North as a result of an increase in student numbers; and again in 1949 to the surviving sections of the old workhouse on Brownlow Hill which had been leased from the Metropolitan Cathedral. In the 1960s, Metallurgy expanded to incorporate Materials Science and under the direction of W S Owen (1957-1965), began to make its name in research. In 1960 the department moved to more suitable accommodation in the George Holt Laboratories, and in 1968 was renamed the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science. It has now been incorporated into the Department of Engineering within the Faculty.
