Biographical/Administrative Information: | A Chair of Naval Architecture was added to Engineering in 1909; by 1914 the University offered degree courses in both Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. The first holder of the Chair was Westcott Stile Abell (1909-1914). He was succeeded by his younger brother Thomas Bertrand Abell who held the chair until 1940, after which it was discontinued, although the department survived until 1953. |
