Biographical/Administrative Information:There was initially little provision for modern languages at the University College. Chairs in Latin and Greek had been established early on but the only modern language chair was that in German, occupied by Kuno Meyer. English and French, although attracting more applicants than Greek, had no chair. The Baines Chair of English Language was established in 1904; the following year a chair of French was created and Charles Bonnier promoted with it. The Department of Russian was built up under Bernard Pares, who took the chair in 1908; the same year as James Fitz-Maurice Kelly was appointed chair of Spanish. Although Italian was taught by Londini, proposals in 1891 and 1902 failed to secure funding for a permanent chair; this did not occur until 1914 when Piero Rebora was appointed.
