Summary:

Copy of letter from Board of Architectural Education to [Registrar] commenting on satisfactory progress being made under Professor Reilly in the Liverpool School of Architecture, also on the training of students in Isometrical projection which they say is a practice would benefit other Schools of Architecture, 15 March 1907.

Letter from Board of Architectural Education to Registrar requesting that an application should be addressed by the authorities of Liverpool University to Council of Royal Institute asking that the two year course at the Architectural School of the University should be recognised as exempting from the Intermediate Examinations of Royal Institute, 1 August 1907.

Copy of letter to Board of Architectural Education from M. Macartney Visitor of the Board, approving of the work of the Department after an inspection. Notes enthusiasm for late classical style on part of Professor Reilly and students but feels that there was a danger of constructive side being left "rather in the lurch"; 9 Feb. 1909.

Copy of letter from Secretary of Board of Architectural Education to Professor Reilly; approval given to alterations in the regulations for degree course at the University suggested by Professor Reilly and list of these alterations 26 February 1909.

Copy of letter from Professor C. H. Reilly to Professor R. Blomfield re. arrangement that the University should have a representative on the Board in same way that it has one on the Central Medical Council. He asks would not the Board:

Differentiate between Universities on the one hand giving degrees under statutes and characters of their own and on the other hand bodies without such authority?

Would it not be possible to distinguish among the Universities themselves, between the University which devotes a fully endowed chair on a life basis to Architecture, and one that does, not? This would raise Architecture to parity with other subjects such as Law, History and Medicine, 5 July 1910.

Copy of Letter from Mr. R. Blomfield, Chairman of Board of Architectural Education, to the Vice-Chancellor, informing him that under the new Charter of the R.I.B.A. the Board of Architectural Education has been entirely re-constructed, the two Boards (Board of Examiners and Board of Architectural Education) having been abolished. Functions of the new Board are to organise, develop and supervise the training of Architectural students wishing to enter the ranks of R.I.B.A. Suggestion that direct relations ought to be established between the Board and External Examiners appointed by the Universities and other authorities which examine in Architecture.

Suggests that:

The Universities should agree to the Board drawing up a list of persons suitable for the posts of External Examiners in Architecture, that the University should instruct the External Examiner to make an annual report to the Board on efficiency of schools where he examined, 24 Nov. 1910.

Copy of letter from R. Blomfield to Vice-Chancellor Dale, referring to difficulty of appointment of External Examiners. He realises that the Universities will maintain independence in this matter, but had hoped his own suggestion would provide a via media. He points out, however, that it is advisable that the Board has some say in selection of External Examiners to maintain a certain standard laid down by the Institute; 7 Dec. 1910.

Letter from Henry A. Miers, Principal of University of London to Dr. A. W. W. Dale, wanting to know whether he had received a letter from Mr. R. Blomfield regarding the proposal that Board of Architectural Education should have a more direct voice in the nomination of External Examiners appointed by the University, and also in what sense the University has replied, 8 Feb. 1911.

Letter from Secretary to Board of Architectural Education to Vice-Chancellor Dale informing him that as part of the re-organisation of the R.I.B.A. Examinations, the Council has decided to allow exemptions only to those Schools which have an approved External Examiner with the power of veto on proposed exemptions. He now wishes the Board to be informed whom the University proposes for the post of External Examiner; 4 Aug. 1911.

Letter from Secretary to Board of Architectural Education to Vice-Chancellor Dale requesting a reply to a letter referring to the appointment of an External Examiner, 24 Oct. 1911.

Letter from Secretary of Board of Architectural Education acknowledging receipt of letter and informs him it shall be laid before the Board on 2 November, 26 Oct. 1911.

Letter from Secretary of Board of Architectural Education to Vice-Chancellor Dale informing him that Mr. Ernest Newton is now acting as External Examiner and that he possesses the confidence of the Board in that capacity, 13 Nov. 1911.

Letter from Ernest Newton to Vice-Chancellor informing him that the Board considers it inadvisable to appoint the Professor of one Architectural School as External Examiner, 20 Feb. 1912.

Letter from C. H. Reilly to V.-C. Dale referring to the letter above, and saying that he will explain the matter when it comes up at the next Board, 28 Feb. 1912.

Letter from Ernest Newton to V.-C. Dale to say that they were instructed by the Board to write to all the recognised Schools of Architecture and acquaint them with the Board's views on the question of the appointment of External Examiners, 13 March, 1912.
