Custodial History:Several years ago, the Basement Film Unit produced a video of old film for sale and it is a copy of this video that Miss Sarah Ogden, President of the Unit, made available for Special Collections and Archives in May 2001. This video was found to be defective but Miss Meena Chauhan, Miss Ogden's successor, loaned a copy of a complete video which Mr Keith Birch (Continuing Education) copied for Special Collections and Archives in March 2003.
Location of originals:A colleague of Miss Chauhan retains the original film, which Mr Birch had acquired and made available to her.
Biographical/Administrative Information:In 1982, in undertaking a list of non-current records retained at the Students' Union, Adrian Allan located and listed 12 reels of film in a large wooden box in the Control Room, Stanley Theatre; these films included Sphinx Reels 1-12. Subsequent enquiries revealed that these films had been removed and lost. However, in March 2000 two former members of the Guild's Basement Film Unit deposited four reels of 16mm. film which they had recently rescued (ref. A.244); labelled 'Sphinx Reels' nos. 1-4, these films are apparently of a Sports Day at 'Wyncote', Panto/Rag parade, Stanley Hall (of the Students' Union) and Panto activities, and the opening of the Inorganic and Physical Chemistry building [by the Duke of Edinburgh, 11 May 1955], [all dating from the mid 1950s].
