Summary:

The site for this project was allocated by the Development Committee at its meeting on 8 Nov. 1958. It was reported to the first meeting of this Sub-Committee that the University's Walter Harding Gymnasium would be demolished shortly and that after this only temporary facilities would be available in the old Trinity Methodist Church in Grove Street. This Sub-Committee was initially called the Recreational Centre Building Sub-Committee but from the minutes of the meeting of 3 Dec. 1965 onwards entitled the Sports Centre Building Sub-Committee following upon the decision of the Physical Recreation Committee to name the building "The Sports Centre" and the sports hall within it "The Walter Harding Gymnasium".

The building was formally opened in 1966 on which occasion an illustrated brochure was published.
