Biographical/Administrative Information:

After first providing residence for students in 1899 the University of Liverpool provision of accommodation has changed a great deal over the past 100 years. In the early years of the University only a small amount of accommodation was needed and residences were separated in to Mens and Womens Halls. Although by the 1970s segregation of the sexes was less defined, with University Hall becoming a mixed sex hall. Due to an increase in student numbers accommodation has evolved from, hostels and converted residential properties into purpose built Halls. However although many of the early Halls are no longer in use, their names have been transfered to the new residences as a mark of respect to the benefactors.

Below is a list of residences, the dates given are the last year in which the accommodation was used:

  • University Hall (Holly Road, Fairfield): closed after 1983-84 session.
  • Hall of Residence, (44-46 Upper Parliament Street) closed after 1908 session.
  • Ashton Rathbone Hostel, (13 Croxteth Road) closed after 1920-21 session
  • Ashton Rathbone Hall (earlier referred to as `The Towers') (38 and 40 Ullet Road in 1924 no. 42 Ullet Road was acquired for the Halls) closed after 1938-39 session
  • Rankin Hall (44 and 46 Ullet Road) closed after 1938-39 session
