Biographical/Administrative Information:Ian Alexander Simpson (1905-1973) was the youngest person to receive a Ph.D from the University of Liverpool in 1927, at the age of twenty-two. From 1927 he worked as a biochemist at the Institute for Chemical Research in Kuala Lumpur. While there he was captured as a prisoner of war and spent over 3 years on the Burma Railway. He was appointed as a nutritionist in the various camps where he was held. After being freed, he returned to Malaya in 1946 to help restart the Institute. Over the following years he attended many international conferences with institutions such as the FAO and UNICEF working to improve nutrition in the Far East. He was eventually appointed senior nutritionist of the Institute; he retired from this post in 1957. In 1962 he joined the FAO team in India as senior nutritionist and worked with them until 1967. Simpson died in 1973.
