Biographical/Administrative Information:In 1903 the University of Liverpool Chemistry Department was presided over by Campbell Brown, one of the founders of the University. The first step toward reorganization was taken in 1904 when F G Donnan was appointed to a new chair of Physical Chemistry. When Campbell Brown died in 1910 he was succeeded by E C Baly who was appointed as Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and in the same year Biochemistry was included as an undergraduate subject. There was still not chair of Organic Chemistry but that came in 1915 with a Chair of Industrial Chemistry to be added in 1926. Around the time of the first world war and after Chemistry was the most important subject in the Faculty of Science
