Biographical/Administrative Information:

Norman Geoffrey Calvert was born in Southport in 1911. He completed an apprenticeship as a fitter at the Vulcan Motor and Engineering Company Ltd (Southport) in 1926.

After studying at night school he received a Pickup Entrance Scholarship to study Mechanical Engineering at Liverpool University in 1931 and graduated with First Class Honours in 1935. He worked on metal fatigue under Prof W. Mason and was awarded his PhD in 1938. He was appointed Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1937 and Senior Lecturer c.1960.

His principle research and teachings interests were Fluid Mechanics and Wind Power.

He retired in 1978 and died in Cumbria in 1984.
