Biographical/Administrative Information:

Margaret Brooks was from Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire and was born in 1932. She studied for a B.A. Hons in Special Studies Hispanic Studies at the University of Liverpool from 1953-1956. Students studying for a degree in Special Studies were required to present themselves in the School of their choice, this being the School of Hispanic Studies in the case of Margaret Brooks. Students were also required to offer an additional subject for examination and, depending on the School, may have had to take further approved courses in subjects prescribed by the School. First year students of Spanish were obliged to take English Language Course A in phonetics, for example. In order to qualify to study for a degree in Special Studies, students had to pass a preliminary examination in Special Studies at the end of their first year of University study. The final examinations were divided into two parts, candidates who passed both of these parts were awarded a B.A. in Special Studies with Honours. Margaret Brooks studied the following courses:

  • 1953-1954 (1st year)
  • Spanish B C E
  • Portuguese A B C
  • Comparative Philology A
