Summary:

Walter Gillings is editor of Fantasy: The Magazine of Science Fiction, and later Fantasy Review and Cosmos.

Gillings writes with the news that Maurice Hugi has died; Gillings says that he is sending page proofs of EFR's novelette Relic, which he considers EFR's best story for years; he discusses EFR's advertisement for the Fortean Society in Fantasy; he explains his position as an editor, and the necessity of making alterations to one of EFR's holograph manuscripts, particularly regarding scientific accuracy; he turns down an unnamed story from EFR on the grounds that it is too "American”, he suggests EFR submit it to Thrilling Wonder magazine, and then he complains that a subsequent unnamed story is too "distinctly British”; describes how publication of Fantasy has been suspended, mostly due to paper shortages, and mentions how Arthur C Clarke would like to buy back all of his manuscripts; later he asks EFR to write a piece for Fantasy Review about Charles Fort from the point of view of science fiction; mentions plans to visit the 1949 World Science Fiction Convention with Ted Carnell; Gillings describes John Beynon Harris [John Wyndham] enthusing over the pacing of EFR's novel Dreadful Sanctuary, and says that Frederik Pohl would like to buy the book rights to the novel; Gillings reports that Gnome Press would like to publish a collection of EFR's Jay Score stories; later, Gillings asks whether he could edit a collection of EFR's stories for a pocketbook series of classic science fiction; he describes his attempts to edit a collection of stories from Tales of Wonder magazine, which would have included EFR's story The Prr-r-eet; he describes his article on Olaf Stapledon in Science Fiction Monthly , and suggests that EFR might visit Stapledon's widow in West Kirby; he also says he would like to write an article about EFR for the same series, and appeals to EFR for assistance, particularly with bibliographical information; when the Science Fiction Monthly piece appears, EFR apparently complains about biographical errors and the quality of the illustration. Also one letter to Ellen Russell after EFR's death, expressing his sorrow and relating memories of EFR.
