Biographical/Administrative Information:William Rathbone II established timber business in Liverpool c.1842. William Rathbone III his son, extended the business and established international merchanting and commission business. Traded in range of commodities including timber, salt, iron, linen, grains, tobacco etc; amongst first importers of American cotton. Firm taken over by William Rathbone IV on his father's death in 1789: conducted by this time in staunch oppostion to slave trade. In 1790 Robert Benson joined as partner: Rathbone and Benson. New partnership formed in 1796 between WR IV, William Duncan and William Hughes: Rathbone Hughes and Duncan. On death of WR IV, 1809, his two sons, WR V and Richard formed new partnership: William and Richard Rathbone, 1814 Adam Hodgson joined the partnership: Rathbone, Hodgson and Co. On his retirement, 1824, the firm began trading as Rathbone Brothers and Co.
