Biographical/Administrative Information:Eleanor Florence Rathbone (1873-1946) was daughter of William Rathbone VI and Emily (née Lyle). First woman elected to Liverpool City Council - served as Independent councillor for Granby ward 1909-1934; elected as Independent M.P for the Combined Universities in 1929 and served until 1945. Associated with many campaigns of social reform, including conditions for labourers and their families, family allowances, children's nutrition, woman's suffrage. One of the founders of the Liverpool Women's Suffrage Society; Chair of the Family Endowment Society doing much to bring about the passing of the Family Allowance Act in 1945; she was a member of the Children's Minimum Committee campaigning for minimum standards of nutrition for all children; Honorrary Secretary for the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees.
