Biographical/Administrative Information:WILLIAM RATHBONE VI (1819-1902) was eldest son of William Rathbone V and Elizabeth (née Greg). Partner in Rathbone Brothers and Co. Dedicated philanthropist and social reformer: established district nursing system in Liverpool in the 1860s, reformed sick nursing in the workhouses, 1860s; 1888-9 hon. sec., then vice president of Queen Victoria's Jubilee Institute for Nurses. M.P. for Liverpool 1868-1880; M.P. for Carnarvonshire 1880-1885 and for N. Carnarvonshire 1885-1895. Involved in formation of University College of Liverpool, 1882; president of the college from 1892. Involved in establishment of University College of North Wales, 1884, president from 1891. Freeman of the city of Liverpool, 1891. Married 1. Lucretia (d.1859) daughter of S.S. Gair of Liverpool in 1847, and 2. Esther EMILY Acheson, daughter of Acheson Lyle of Londonderry, in 1862. Ten children: William Gair Rathbone VII, Elizabeth Lucretia ('Elsie'), Thomas Ashton, Henry Gair, Edward Lucretius, Emily Evelyn ('Evie'), Acheson Lyle, Bertram Eric, Eleanor Florence and Francis Warre.
