Biographical/Administrative Information:Bernard Gilliat-Smith (1883-1974) was a philologist who translated the Gospel of St Luke for the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1912, and was the first to make the distinction between Vlach and non-Vlach dialects of Romani. He was a member of the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society editorial board 1931-1967. Gilliat-Smith served in the British Consular Service in many locations including Leningrad, Bucharest and New Orleans.
