Summary:

This series consists of volumes containing the Minutes of the Board of Directors of the Cunard Steamship Co Ltd covering the period from the first meeting of the Board of Directors held on 30 May 1878 until the meeting of the Board held on 14 Dec 1970. Each volume is indexed alphabetically except the first. The minutes are signed.

The Board usually met monthly and conducted business relating to policy direction, financial matters, ship movements, shipbuilding, and personnel matters (promotion, discipline, retirement, salaries) amongst other things. The Board also received the minutes of Sub Committees and the Board minutes of associated companies such as the Port Line. The indices provide a broad picture of matters discussed by the board. Indices are alphabetical and can be searched for terms such as ship names, shipping companies, notable events, individuals etc. The first meeting of the Board was held on 30 May 1878 when William Charles MacIver was voted Chairman. The assets etc. of the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Co, and the British and Foreign Steam Navigation Co were transferred to the Cunard Steamship Co Ltd at this time. In 1934, Cunard merged with the White Star Line, and from this time on the minutes of the Cunard Steamship Co Ltd provide much less detail about the operations of the company, as much of the assets of the company (including the building of S.S. No. 534, the Queen Mary) were transferred to the newly formed Cunard White Star Ltd. However, in July 1947 the whole of the Cunard White Star Ltd.'s capital came under the control of the Cunard Company and in 1949 the company ceased to trade under that name and once again all business was undertaken by the Cunard Steamship Co Ltd.
