Biographical/Administrative Information: | 1832--1909: geologist; architect, and civil engineer at Liverpool from 1860; laid out Blundellsands estate, 1868; wrote much on glacial and post-glacial geology of Lancashire, on mineral structure of slaty rocks, and on geomorphology; published Origin of Mountain Ranges (1886), and Evolution of EarthStructure (1903); F.G.S. 1872; Murchison medallist 1896.
