Biographical/Administrative Information:

The Academic Institutions Management Service was founded as the North Western Universities' Organisation and Methods Unit in late 1967, to serve the Universities of Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester, Salford, and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). In 1986 the organisation's name was changed to the North Western Universities' Management Services Unit. Membership grew to include the University of Birmingham, the University of Wales, Bangor, and the University of Keele. In 1994 the name was changed again to the Academic Institutions Management Service (AIMS). AIMS was wound up in 2003 and replaced by AIMS and Associates Ltd, which fulfilled a similar role until its closure in 2012.

The organisation produced commissioned research reports for its member institutions and external bodies, which covered a wide range of aspects of university administration. In the 1980s the Unit also provided the secretariat for North Western Universities' Joint Consultative Committee on Purchasing Services and Supplies, which aimed to take advantage of economies of scale through joint purchasing.
