Biographical/Administrative Information:

Professor Lord Simey of Toxteth (1906-1969) was Lecturer in Public Administration, 1931-39, and Charles Booth Professor of Social Science, 1939-69. He was created a Life Peer in 1965.

Dr Margaret Simey (nèe Todd) (1906-2004) was the University of Liverpool's first honours graduate (B.A.) in Social Science in 1928. She married Mr Thomas (Tom) Simey in 1935. She served on Liverpool City Council, 1963-74, and on Merseyside County Council, 1973-86, chairing the Merseyside Police Authority, 1981-86. Together with her husband, she wrote a biography of Charles Booth and was herself the author of a number of books, reflecting on her own experience in politics and community work. She received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University in 1988.

During the period 1941-45 Professor Simey was Adviser on Social Welfare to the Comptroller for Development and Welfare in the West Indies, and in 1946 his book, Welfare and Planning in the West Indies was published. Mrs. Simey deposited her husband's papers relating to his work in the West Indies, including copies of his letters to Miss Ellinor Black, acting head of the Department of Social Science, and others during his absence in the West Indies, and related papers, in April 1988 (D396/4-7). The correspondence with Miss Black and with Mr. Stanley Dumbell (the University Registrar) in particular throws a good deal of light on developments in the University as well as in the West Indies.
