The Liverpool University School of Architecture's archives in Special Collections and Archives includes letter books of Prof Reilly at S3205 to S3213

These Letter Books of Professor Reilly (who held the Roscoe Chair of Architecture 1904-1933) contain copies of his manuscript letters both on university affairs (letters to the Vice-Chancellor, etc.) and on more personal (letters to relations, letters re-Liverpool Repertory Theatre, etc.) and on business and professional matters. These latter letters concern his work mainly on the following buildings:- New Architecture Building at the University, alterations at the University's Chemical Laboratories, the University Students' Union, gardens at Dove Park, gardens at 5 Ullet Road, and work at Wavertree Parish Church (including new chancel), all in Liverpool; cottages for Mr. W.H. Lever [at Port Sunlight] (designs submitted by Reilly's students); and 7 & 8 Buckingham Street, and St. Barnabas Mission Church, Shacklewell, in London.

The School's other archives in the University Archives' custody include the following:-

Amongst the papers of the Vice-Chancellor in the University Archives are the following relating specifically to Professor Reilly (fuller details being given in list of papers of the Principals later Vice-Chancellors):-

  • in 6A/4 3 letters to Professor Reilly from and on behalf of Sir J.T. Brunner regarding schemes for an Arts Faculty building in Ashton Street, 16 Nov. - 15 Dec. 1904.
  • in 6A/10 Letters to the Principal from, amongst others, Professor Reilly regarding payment for his professional services for the proposed extension to the Victoria Building, 1907.
  • 6B/3/5 Letters to the Vice-Chancellor from Professor Reilly and related note of the Vice-Chancellor, on the following subjects - equipment (slides and diagrams), 1904; departmental grant, 1904; work at Lyme Park for Lord Newton, 1904; Bromboro [shares], 1909; prospectus of the School of Architecture, 1910; model of town of Osaka in Japan, 1910; appointment of qualified architect for a new University building, 1911; lecture and studio hours, and students who have degraded, 1911. 21 March 1904-5 Aug. 1911.
  • Also duplicated copy of report on academic costume for B.Arch. degree, 1915.
  • 4/1/26 Correspondence of Professor Reilly and others regarding Mr. W.H. Lever's gift of £500 to provide for three Travelling Scholarships and £500 - £1000 annually for three years for the promotion of the study of town planning and landscape architecture in the School of Architecture, 1908.
  • 4A/3/5 Correspondence of Professor Reilly with the Vice-Chancellor and others regarding accommodation for the School of Architecture: the Liberty Buildings, the former Lock Hospital, and proposed new building, and related papers, 1910-16 and 1922.

  • 3/30 Notebook containing Professor Reilly [and others?] architectural sketches, plans, sections and elevations of following buildings (including suggested schemes): Students' Union, Wavertree Church, Garden for 5 Ullet Road, and Chemical Laboratory, all in Liverpool, c. 1909-c.1912.
  • 3/30 Correspondence of Professor Reilly with Professor E.C.C. Baly, Mr. C. Sydney Jones and Mr. Paul Waterhouse regarding Professor Reilly's scheme for the extension of the Chemical Laboratories, 1910-11, 1919.

Amongst papers relating in particular to the financing of the Department of Civic Design and the Town Planning Review 1910-35 deposited by the late Emeritus Professor F. E. Hyde with the University Archives (ref. D116) is some correspondence of Professor Reilly with Mr. W.H. Lever and Professor Patrick Abercrombie on the same subject.
