| Biographical/Administrative Information: | Emeritus Professor Sir (Thomas) Norman (Arthur) Jeffcoate was born in 1907 and educated at Attleborough Elementary School (which he entered at the age of 7 years, and which he left at the age of 9 years with a scholarship), King Edward VI Grammar School, Nuneaton (his home town), and the University of Liverpool, where he graduated M.B., Ch.B. with 1st class Honours in 1929 and M.D. in 1932, the subject of his thesis for the latter degree being The Aschheim Zondek reaction, and a consideration of the origins and functions of the Hormones concerned therein. Whilst at the University as a student, Norman Jeffcoate held a Warwickshire County Major Scholarship and a Leaving Scholarship granted by Nuneaton Education Committee. In addition to following the medical curriculum he was Hon. Sec. to the Guild of Undergraduates in 1926-27 and was Senior Student and Chairman of the House Committee of the Men's hostel in Ullet Road in 1927-28 and 1928-29. He also obtained Colours for Cricket in 1925 and 1926, and Colours for Rugby Football during three sessions 1926-29. He was awarded the University's Kanthack Medal (1928), the Silver Medal in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (1928), and the Gold Medal in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1929, and was proxime accessit in respect of the Holt Physiology medal in 1926 and the Gold Medal for Medicine in 1929. After graduating Jeffcoate held the University Ethel Boyce Fellowship in Gynaecology 1930-32 and the Samuels Memorial Scholarship in Gynaecology and Obstetrics 1933-34 (whilst he engaged in research). Having obtained the necessary higher qualification of M.D., M.R.C.O.G, FRCSE, all in 1932, he was appointed Hon. Assist. Consultant Surgeon to the Liverpool Maternity Hospital 1932-45, to the Women's Hospital, Liverpool, 1935-45 and Hon. Assist. Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to the David Lewis Northern Hospital 1933-1945. He held the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the University 1945-72 and, during this period, was an Hon. Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to the Liverpool Royal Infirmary, the Liverpool Maternity Hospital and Mill Road Maternity Hospital. Jeffcote died on 13 October 1992, aged 85 years.
