Biographical/Administrative Information:William Doran (1891-1992) obtained a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry at the University of Liverpool in 1917. Although registered for a Ph.D this was never completed and he obtained an unregistered MSc in 1921 while employed as a Demonstrator/Assistant Lecturer in the Organic Chemistry Department. In 1925 Doran visited the Eidgenossiche Technische Hochschule in Zurich to investigate microanalytical methods. His work in this field is described briefly in the paper British Contributions to the progress of Microchemistry (listed at D460/2/17 below). Among papers from his time in Germany are laboratory notes belonging to Herbert Evers (B.Sc. Hons. Chemistry 1922). Doran's fluent command of German is mentioned in Kelly's history of the University (For Advancement of Learning) (p.242) in the context of a visit to the Physics and Chemistry departments by Albert Einstein. He retired as lecturer in 1957 after 38 years service.
