| Biographical/Administrative Information: | Professor James E Cross (1920-96) was educated at the University of Bristol (BA in English with First Class Honours 1946, Diploma in Education 1947, MA 1951). He was Lektor in English at the University of Lund, 1947-49 (where in 1962 he graduated Filosofi Doktor); Lecturer, later Reader, in English, University of Bristol, 1949-65; and Baines Professor of English Language, University of Liverpool, 1965-87. Amongst the honours he received were an Honorary Doctorate of the University Jaume I [James 1st], Spain. On his 65th birthday, he was presented with a Festschrift, Marie Collins, Jocelyn Price and Andrew Hamer, editors, Leeds Studies in English New Series Vol. XVI 1985: Sources and Relations: Studies in Honour of J.E. Cross (School of English, The University of Leeds); besides a biographical note and a photographic portrait of Professor Cross, this volume of twenty-three essays also includes a bibliography of Professor Cross's writings, published 1951-84. Obituaries of Professor Cross were published in The Independent, 1 January 1997, The Daily Telegraph, 6 January 1997, and The Times, 22 January 1997, amongst other newspapers. |
