Summary: | Professor Aylward Manley Blackman papers, comprising: Correspondence and other papers of Blackman including letters on excavations in Egypt 1907-1936 and letters to Revd and Mrs J H Blackman 1871-c 1881; Correspondence of Winifred S Blackman; Miscellaneous family papers including photographs, genealogical papers and hospital case notes 1849-1851. The letters also reflect the career of his sister Winifred S. Blackman, 1872-1950, a prominent Egyptian anthropologist. This list is prefaced by summaries of their careers based on the op. cit. supplemented by information obtained during sorting. Additional background information gleaned from a cursory reading of the correspondence in the sorting process is offered as a guide under the appropriate years, together with a rough genealogical table following the biographical summaries. Typed transcripts of some letters reflecting Professor Blackman's professional work have been made by Miss L. Collins, secretary to Professor H. W. Fairman. Details are given under the heading Excavations in Egypt in the present list. Much of the correspondence, especially for the period 1871-1900, is of a purely domestic nature. However it is of interest as reflecting the social and economic circumstances of a Victorian clerical family. |
