Papers originally stored in unlabelled box file concerning the Falklands conflict, particularly concerning the claim investigated by the Falkland Islands Review Committee chaired by Lord Franks 1982-1983 that the Conservative Government could have prevented hostilities by the early sending of a naval presence to the area; as was done by the Labour Government in 1977 when David Owen was Foreign Secretary at which time two frigates and a nuclear-powered submarine were sent to the surrounding area. • MS and typescript drafts of David Owen's `Falklands Diary' charting events surrounding David Owen's involvement in the 1977 Falklands deployment as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs; and typescript copies of extracts from letters, meeting minutes, statements from 1977 concerning these events including copied extract from the rules of engagement governing the deployment.
• Transcripts of statements made by David Owen concerning the Franks report and events of 1977, including copy of note of an oral evidence given to the Falkland Islands Review Committee by David Owen, 18 Oct 1982; copied Hansard extract including David Owen's statements to the House of Commons revealing rules of engagement for the 1977 naval deployment, 25 Jan 1983; transcripts of statements made by David Owen countering claims made by Admiral Lord Lewin, First Sea Lord in 1977, that David Owen's Commons statement was inaccurate; also includes copy of article by Lord Lewin, `The Falklands: 1977 and all that` and transcript of radio interview with Lord Lewin for the World this Weekend, 30 Jan 1983; draft of David Owen's article for the Observer commenting on the findings of the Franks Committee, 23 Jan 1983 etc
