Mr. Edward Morris, Curator of Fine Art, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, dates John Gibson's letter (D556/3/1) as probably 31 May or 1 June 1848 and suggests it may have been addressed to Richard Alison (see correspondence on correspondence file A.5/4 (D556). Mr Eric Forster, who is researching the work of John Gibson, states that this letter is not in the handwriting of John Gibson and that he suspects it is a letter from Benjamin Gibson

Biographical/Administrative Information:Charles John Allen was born on 2 September 1862 in Middlesex and educated at the Palace School, Enfield. After attending evening classes at the Lambeth school of Art he worked as Head Modeller for Sir Hamo Thorneycroft and was at the Royal Academy. He was a teacher of sculpture and modelling, City of Liverpool School of Architecture and Applied Arts between 1894 and 1905. In 1899, he married Ethel Margaret Eaton, daughter of Captain Alfred Eaton R.N. and Margaret Emily Williams. He died on 10 January 1956.
