Biographical/Administrative Information:

David Canter was born on 5 Jan 1944. Educated initially at Liverpool Collegiate Grammar School, he received his BA and PhD at the University of Liverpool. After leaving the University of Liverpool he became a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, before moving to Tokyo on a Leverhulme Fellowship at Tokyo University. He moved to the University of Surrey as a lecturer in 1971. He became head of the psychology department at this university in 1987. He moved to the University of Liverpool in 1994 as a Professor of Psychology, where he directed the Centre for Investigative Psychology.

Canter has produced numerous articles and books in the field of psychology, on subjects including environmental psychology, human behaviour, facet theory, and criminal psychology.

In 2009 he moved to the University of Huddersfield, where he served as Professor of Psychology and Director of the International Research Centre for Investigative Psychology, retiring in 2017, then completing a PhD in music composition at Liverpool Hope University in 2023.

He was appointed Emeritus Professor at the University of Liverpool in 2009.
